Introducing The Block: What We Can Sustain Together

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when a lot of people decide to keep showing up for one another.

As we prepare to open the doors to our new home in Hell’s Kitchen, we’re thinking about what it really means to build a community, and what it takes to sustain one.

At IndieSpace, we know that strong communities aren't built by any one person. They're built by people showing up for one another, sharing resources, and investing in a collective future. For us, that means putting resources directly into the hands of New York City's independent performing artists, companies, and venues, and ensuring they have the support they need to not just survive here, but thrive.

But sustaining that work takes a community, too.

That's why we're excited to introduce The Block, IndieSpace's new community of sustaining donors. Built on the belief that collective generosity creates lasting impact, The Block creates a coalition of artists, arts lovers, New Yorkers, neighbors, and champions who believe independent performing artists are essential to the life and culture of New York City.

One person gives $5. Another gives $20. Someone else gives $100. They do it again next month. And the month after that. Individually, those gifts might not look like the enormous donations that make headlines, but together, they can change what’s possible for our organization.

Why does sustaining matter?

Grassroots organizations spend a lot of time thinking about resources. Not because fundraising is the reason we exist, but because reliable resources determine how boldly we can pursue the reason we do.

The Block is built around a simple idea: when people choose to give consistently, at whatever amount works for them, those gifts come together to create something incredibly powerful for the artists we serve, stability.  Your ongoing monthly investment in IndieSpace's work creates predictable, flexible revenue that allows us to respond to artists' needs, provide direct support, maintain affordable creative space, it gives us room to experiment and say yes, and invest in the long-term infrastructure artists need to thrive.

Most importantly, it creates a model where sustaining this work doesn’t rest on one person writing an enormous check. It rests on a community. A one-time gift helps IndieSpace accomplish something today. Sustaining gifts help ensure we can continue doing that work tomorrow.

So, welcome to The Block!

On The Block, it’s not about how much you give, it’s about continuing to show up. Whether you give $10 or $500 a month, every donor is part of the same community, sustaining performing artists and the city we love together.

And, as a member of this community, you’ll receive:

  • Insider updates and first looks at IndieSpace news

  • Early invitations to events and community programming

  • Access to our annual impact report

  • Recognition on our digital donor roll

  • An invitation to our annual sustainer gathering, The Block Party

  • And more!

A new home for giving

Alongside the launch of The Block, IndieSpace is also moving our online donations from PayPal to Give Lively.

Give Lively will now be our home for both one-time and recurring online gifts, creating a simpler giving experience and making it easier for our community to choose the kind of support that works for them.

For existing recurring donors: you were The Block before The Block had a name. Your ongoing support helped inspire this community, and we’re enormously grateful that you have continued showing up for IndieSpace.

You don’t have to make a big gift to make a difference
We want The Block to challenge an idea that shows up far too often in fundraising: that philanthropy belongs primarily to people with significant wealth. Supporting a grassroots organization can look like a lot of things. Maybe you can give $5 every month. Maybe you can give $50 once this year. Maybe giving financially isn’t possible right now, but you can send this page to three friends. Maybe you know someone who loves indie theater, someone who cares deeply about keeping artists in New York, or someone looking for a new organization to be a philanthropic leader in.

That matters, too.

A healthy organization needs major donors, institutional partners, volunteers, advocates, artists, audiences, neighbors, and lots and lots of people willing to contribute what they can. That’s how blocks work. No single neighbor makes a neighborhood.

A gift becomes another gift.

A donor becomes a neighbor.

A group of neighbors becomes a block.

And together, we build something that lasts.

Welcome to The Block.
