The Potluck
“Solidarity is just another kind of queerness.”
In 1979, five labor organizers were murdered at a protest in the streets of Greensboro, NC, by members of the KKK and the American Nazi Party. A year later, César James Alvarez was born into the survivor community and named for two of the victims. 37 years after that, César got a commission to write a musical about the Greensboro Massacre, but it turned into a show about ghosts… and capitalism…and how to recuperate from trauma that happened to you before you were even born.
The Potluck is a new musical featuring a 12 person intergenerational cast that conjures the soft side of the revolution, and tells a story about what to do when the government is actually trying to kill you.
Help Make Indie Theater Count!
IndieSpace is collaborating with the Culture & Arts Policy Institute to build a verified, public record of NYC's Small Theater Venues – the spaces with under-99-seat capacity that routinely go overlooked by funders and policymakers because there is no aggregated data about them.
We need your knowledge to finish it!
Drop in anytime. Gonzalo Casals from the Institute will give you a quick intro, then hand you printouts of venue data to check against what you actually know – names, addresses, who's still open, who's closed. No experience needed. You know these theaters. That's the point.
The goal: turn our community's working knowledge into advocacy-ready evidence that can unlock funding and shape policy. Your 20 minutes of fact-checking help the whole sector.
Why This Gathering Matters
Every time we host an IndieSpace Together, we’re reminded: the most important resource we have is each other.
Indie theater can be isolating. The work is demanding. The path isn’t always clear. But when we make space to come together - to share a room, a meal, a conversation - it shifts something.
This gathering is designed to be flexible, welcoming, and rooted in the kind of connection that keeps our creative community strong.
As you may know, we’re building our new space in Hell’s Kitchen with this exact kind of gathering in mind – a place where artists don’t just work, but connect, share resources, and build something collectively.
Events like this help us practice that future now, shaping a space that truly reflects what our community needs to thrive.
The Connection Lottery
By attending, you’re entered in the IndieSpace Connection Lottery for a chance to win $500 to support your artistic journey. The recipient will be chosen at The Big Give 2026 in December.
Being present is part of the process, and this is our way of celebrating that!
