Mental Health for Indie Theater Artists
Mental Health Grant for Indie Theater Artists
The IndieSpace Mental Health Grant awards individual artists with $500 grants to use toward therapy, medication, meditation classes, and any other mental health-related costs.
It is our hope that by providing this financial resource, we can help remove barriers that prevent artists from seeking and receiving the care, support, and information they need to care for their mental health.
The IndieSpace Mental Health Grant is temporarily paused for a brief period of reflection and thoughtful revitalization. IndieSpace will pay out all remaining eligible applicants from applications submitted in 2025.
Resource Guide for Indie Theater Artists
IndieSpace created an online resource guide to help our community find assistance with difficulties they may face outside of work.
This page includes resources on food insecurity, healthcare, dental care, vision care, sexual and reproductive health, legal assistance, resources for immigrants and undocumented individuals, a list of emergency funds available to theater artists, and more.
The Artist Sustainability Project is a platform for research initiated by interdisciplinary artists David Thomson and Kate Watson-Wallace that seeks to create and expand discourse surrounding ideas of financial, artistic, and personal empowerment in the arts community.
They created a resource for artists on topics like creating a financial foundation, budgeting, retirement, taxes, healthcare and wellness, housing, estate planning, legal, and additional artist resources.
Mental Health Resource Lists
Being a theater artist in New York City means navigating uncertainty, pressure, and a constant push to keep creating – even when your mental health needs attention.
We know that mental health support is essential for all artists – and we also know that artists do not experience the world, or systems of care, in the same ways. Factors such as race, ethnicity, disability, immigration status, language, gender identity, and cultural background can shape how mental health challenges show up, how safe it feels to seek care, and what kinds of support are truly helpful.
That’s why we created individual resource lists for different affinity groups within our community. These guides are intended to highlight culturally competent, identity-affirming, and community-informed resources that recognize the specific realities many artists navigate.
Our goal is to make it easier to find care that feels accessible, relevant, and respectful. Because everyone deserves support that meets them where they are.
