Indie Theater Discord Server

The Indie Theater Discord Server is a virtual home for artists to collaborate, communicate, and educate. You can learn about indie theater opportunities and network with like-minded artists and workers.

We created it because the community asked for it. Several people asked about this at the Indie Theater Convocation in 2023, wanting a place to communicate and connect at their leisure. As social media channels become frayed – and some can be a bit toxic – we wanted a safe and inspiring space for artists.

Who is the Indie Theater Discord Server for?

This is for anyone and everyone in the indie theater community. It is an ideal place if you’ve ever done any one of the following:

  • Posted on social media asking for a recommendation or referral

  • Attended an event to connect with other people in the indie theater community

  • Looked for grants or funding opportunities for individual artists or small companies

  • Sought advice on working with a venue or company for the first time

  • Joined a message board or Facebook group related to indie theater

  • Searched online for announcements for auditions, casting calls, job openings

  • Researched a performance venue or rehearsal space

Channel Overview

Discord uses channels to help make communication easier and allow members to choose what conversations they want to participate in. Channels are like specific rooms within a building where conversations happen. They help organize discussions and activities around different topics, making it easy for community members to find and join conversations that interest them.

Some popular channels on the Indie Theater Discord include:

  • employment-directory – You can post and find announcements for auditions, casting calls, job openings, and more.

  • get-that-money – You can find and share information on grants, fellowships, residencies, and any other opportunities that will fuel your projects or you as an individual and an artist.

  • give-and-take – For those seeking, bartering, or offering set materials, services, and skills within our vibrant community. Whether you have spare props, technical expertise, or any talent to share, here’s your chance to connect with fellow members.

  • resources-and-support – A place to find and share practical resources that support you as artists and humans. Here, you will find links to things like free tax prep, legal support, or housing or food insecurity resources.

  • shameless-plugs – A channel where you can unapologetically share what you have going on in the artistic world. Whether you have exciting news, new projects to announce, or stellar reviews to boast about, this is your place!

  • venue-and-rehearsal-space-deals – A place to find your next venue for rehearsal, class, or performance. You can also share feedback on the spaces in NYC that you’ve found are welcoming, accessible, and affordable.

We recently created channels dedicated to specific roles in indie theater – #designers, #technicians, #stage-managers, #pr-and-marketing, #producers, #directors, and general channel for #Talking-Shop

There is also a dedicated channel for #venue-operators. We also have a #small-budget-orgs, a place for the members of our Growing Small Budget meetings to connect and anyone who is growing an organization.

IndieSpace also added several Affinity Groups. We recognize the importance of having space where individuals with shared identities can come together to connect and support each other. Our affinity groups include #theater-makers-of-color, #immigrant-theater-makers, and #lgbtqia-makers.
